Letterboxing Mackinac Island Style
Letterboxing is an intriguing pastime combining navigational skills and rubber stamp artistry in a charming “treasure hunt” style outdoor quest. or as the hipsters say...old school geocaching. Just grab an Island map, a blank journal to record your visit and some good walkin’ shoes. And for energy while hiking, don’t forget to bring the original power bar ...Mackinac Island Fudge.
Box 1 Anne’s Tablet Letterbox
Head up Crow’s Nest Trail, turn left at the top of the trail, follow the path to Anne’s Tablet. Go the railing by the water find Anne’s Tablet Trail to memorial. Find the word “Novels”, sitting, look over right shoulder and up the hill. Between two trees is a stump. The letterbox is inside the base of the stump.
Box 2 Robinson’s Folly Letterbox
At starting point on East Bluff, follow road right, homes on left till “Cedar Hill”. Look at end of railing on right for a trail, follow trail on water’s side to a clearing and view to arrive at Robinson’s Folly Stand by the clump of trees on this side of railing, look away from water to two trails, between the trails is a clump of brush and cedar.
Just behind clump (use the trail onthe right), look under branches or rocks
Box 3 Arch Rock Letterbox
Opposite the bathrooms at Arch Rock, follow South Bicycle Trail to top of small hill, still in sight of Arch Rock. At the end of the railing on left, look to your right for two logs with a rock underneath. Under the rock is the letterbox.
Box 4 Somewhere in Time Letterbox
At the end of the boardwalk walk a few more feet and you will see the “Somewhere in Time” marker where
Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymor’s characters first met. Keep going on the paved road and count 40 steps or 20 paces, from the marker. Look for the second tree before the clearing. Between the trees under some rocks is the letterbox.
